Howard County Greenfest - 4/5/2008

All - HAL's presence at GreenFest today was a resounding success. Thanx to David S. for the great handouts, Ben Eve for his expertise in sharing his middle school project regarding sky brightness, Eddie for always being there, and especially Steve J., whose H-alpha filter on his AP near the front door wowed the crowds and had them looking for us inside. Thanx also to wife Sally who helped her "third son" complete his science project.

Our two tri-fold posters on "Why Should We Care About Light Pollution?" and "Choose Civility
When Making Lighting Decisions" stimulated numerous questions and had people scratching their heads as to why society doesn't make better lighting decisions when it's such a win-win. Our handout, "How to Talk to Your Neighbor About Light Trespass" was a big hit.

Gary Arthur, head of Parks, and John Byrd, head of Rec. each stopped by and had nice conversations about the observatory project. The day finished with me corralling 3 of the 12 members of the County's new Environment and Sustainability Board into sitting down at our table and listening to my light pollution spiel for 10 minutes. Dave completed the perfect day by handing out the appropriate supporting article each time they asked a question - priceless. As of today, I believe HAL is a voice in the community.
