Solar Sidewalk Astronomy Event

Despite patchy clouds that kept Sol hidden from us about 60% of the time, we had a great Solar viewing event at Central Library this morning (Saturday, May 5th). The temperatures were great, the crowd was appreciative, and everyone had fun.

There was a nice sunspot group that looked great in white light, and had interesting filaments associated with it when viewed in hydrogen alpha, and a couple of nice prominences developed and changed over the course of the two hour event.

We had a really great turnout of HAL members, and a hearty Thank You! goes out to everyone who brought scopes: Teresa Palomar, Eddie Crawford, Chas Rimpo, David Stein, Herman Heyn, and Steve Jaworski. All told, we had five white light scopes and two hydrogen alphas. Greg Ealick and Marc Feuerberg were there as well to work the crowd, enjoy the views, and commiserate whenever a cloud blocked the sun. I know several folks took pictures, and I suspect those will be up on the website in the near future.

We won't have our next Library events until this Fall, but we have our regular monthly events at Alpha Ridge each of the next two Saturdays. Hope to see you there!

Regards,

Chris Todd
